Using fragments of Richard Wagner’s opera ‘The Flying Dutchman’, Senta is a sound work referencing Winifred Wagner who was born in Hastings.
Winifred Wagner was married at an early age to Wagner’s son Siegfried. This was in order to produce an heir and to dispel rumours of Siegfried’s homosexuality. Winifred was a close friend and rumoured lover of Hitler, themes explored in AN Wilson’s novel ‘Winnie and Wolf’. On Siegfried’s death, Winifred took control of the Wagner Festival in Bayreuth and turned it into a platform for Nazi propaganda.
