Tilley has been selected as the Durbar Hall artist-in-residence at Hastings Museum and will be working there for ten days during Coastal Currents.

During the residency, Tilley will be making a series of drawings exploring the architecture of the Durbar Hall, which was designed by the English architect, Sir Caspar Purdon and created in 1885/6 by two Punjabi craftsmen Muhammad Baksh and Muhammad Juma, and as a result can be said to be the ultimate hybrid creation of ‘east meets west’ during this high colonial era. Tilley will also be creating a cabinet of curiosities based on the artefacts collected by the Brassey family during their round-the- world travels on their yacht The Sunbeam in the 1870s.

TUESDAY 29 SEPT, 8-9pm … ONE NIGHT ONLY…
Sample works as a painter and sculptor respectively. For Coastal Currents, he is creating a large scale kinetic installation with elements of viewer participation. The project centres on a number of innovative devices, based on traps used by nomadic tribes, which the artists and audience will activate to intentionally destroy an object. A cross-over between installation and ‘happening’. Sample’s work demonstrates a childlike enthusiasm for discovery and experimentation while playfully exploring the properties and possibilities of everyday materials.

Using fragments of Richard Wagner’s opera ‘The Flying Dutchman’, Senta is a sound work referencing Winifred Wagner who was born in Hastings.

Winifred Wagner was married at an early age to Wagner’s son Siegfried. This was in order to produce an heir and to dispel rumours of Siegfried’s homosexuality. Winifred was a close friend and rumoured lover of Hitler, themes explored in AN Wilson’s novel ‘Winnie and Wolf’. On Siegfried’s death, Winifred took control of the Wagner Festival in Bayreuth and turned it into a platform for Nazi propaganda.

Multi-screen video disaster waiting to ‘mishappen’ in a shopfront near you soon.

The artists are using a shop window installation of salvaged TV sets to promote the 5th Hastings Film Challenge. The TVs turn on/off at random, the films interspersed with images from new experimental looped works, as if an unseen viewer was channel hopping. The artists hope that passers-by will be intrigued, recognise a location or person and maybe even watch a whole film. Within the loop will be information on the forthcoming Film Challenge.
