Clare Hackney is lead artist for Highlight, a voluntary organisation whose aim is to raise awareness on global issues. This year Highlight has put together a show called Children at War that is touring East Sussex. The interactive mural that Clare has created for Coastal Currents is an anti-knife crime mural with the title He’ll Never She’ll Never They’ll Never, which teenagers have contributed their ideas to who have already been to the Children at War exhibition. There will be the opportunity for Hastings teenagers to participate in Children at War by participating in Spray Painting Workshops. The workshops will be run on a drop in basis. Funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund. Free.
Create your own Pin Hole Camera

A series of workshops exploring the magic of pinhole photography ending with an exhibition of the images produced by participants. All ages and abilities are welcome to come and learn how to create their own pinhole cameras and process the pictures themselves in a photographic darkroom. Workshops are to be held on a weekly basis with a choice of either Mondays or Wednesdays. The workshops run for four weeks and cost a one off fee of £35, concs £30 including materials. Sculpturecoast – redesign the coast!

In this workshop, artists, community groups and interested individuals are invited to engage – purely speculatively – with public art in Hastings & St Leonards. We will post online ‘sites’ on the seafront and everyone is invited to respond with proposals and interventions for those ‘sites’. Come to the workshop with ideas and inspiration; Mike Williams will provide materials and support to help you turn your idea into a design! Face Up Theatre Mask Making Workshop
4,5,11 September 10am – 6pm : WorkshopsThe aim of this workshop is for you to leave with a durable ‘working’ mask, and to provide you with the confidence and know how to create more. We will start with thinking about the design and different functions of masks. You will then be invited to create your own design in clay, cast it in plaster, and complete with papier mache. Day three will concentrate on finishing and painting techniques. All materials will be provided and no previous experience in mask making or sculpting is necessary. Please note you will be asked to take your plaster mould away with you after the first weekend in order to complete the papier mache process at home during the week. Total cost of workshop is £150. Conscious Oil; events, workshops & talks

Over two days a series of events will explore the imagery presented in the exhibition “Conscious Oil”; starting with a Geological Qigong session with practitioner Annie Cryar at 10am Saturday 11th through to a writers’ workshop descending into the unconscious places that oil washes up with poet Anne Rouse at 4pm on Sunday 12th. In between there will be poetry readings, talks on the politics and history of oil, children’s and adult’s storytelling, music, films, a Transition Town presence and a space to discuss, contemplate and engage with the huge spirit of oil.

Street Elders Project: We Have All The Time…

Street theatre workshop developing into a piece of work performed later the same day. It is aimed specifically at older people, (50+, of all abilities, experience not necessary) leading to the creation of a piece of street theatre or promenade performance that will address issues of perceptions, invisibility and expectations of the older generation. The performance will be devised from the work within the group on the day giving it a spontaneous and unrepeatable twist, a moment in time. As You Like It workshops

Come along and get involved in making art and craft including lanterns, wings and signs and learn about Shakespeare’s forest-themed play ‘As You Like It’ while taking in the beautiful surroundings of Church Wood Local Nature Reserve. You then have the opportunity to watch ‘As You Like It’ performed by a theatre company as you follow the actors around the woodland. These workshops are aimed at children aged 16 years and under and will require adult supervision. This an event funded by the ‘Get Yourself Connected’ project for Greater Hollington in conjunction with Hastings Borough Council.
