art in romney marsh 2011 returns for a fifth year. It is a contemporary arts project providing an opportunity for artists to create site specific work in response to the inspiring medieval churches of Romney Marsh. Romney Marsh is located in a unique landscape on the south east tip of the Kent coastline, within easy reach of Ashford, Rye and Hastings. The juxtaposition of contemporary art and the ancient church sites creates an opportunity for an exciting dialogue between the ancient and modern.
Curators include Jonathan Wright, Andrew Kötting and Angela Kingston and there will also be live music from Bela Emerson, North Sea Radio Orchestra and John Blood.

This year Creative Coast have worked with Zeroh to develop a new look to the brand of Coastal Currents. The marketing campaign kicks off next week 15 August with Promenade a series of 8 commissioned posters displayed along the seafront and as 8 collectable postcards scattered around the local area. Promenade will feature the work of eight well-known artists with a local or coastal connection. Artists include: Maggi Hambling, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Billy Childish, Ben Eine, Iain Sinclair & Andrew Kotting, and local printmakers Aardvark-on-Sea

Coastal Currents Visual Arts Festival 2012

8 September – 23 September

Coastal Currents returns in 2012 to showcase a wide-range of art exhibitions, performances and events throughout Hastings, St Leonards and Rother. This is an exciting time for cultural regeneration in Hastings with the opening of the Jerwood Gallery and the celebration of the Olympiad. Hastings’ cultural activity has attracted considerable attention over recent years, with works by Banksy and Ben Eine proving very popular with local residents and visitors.

Last years festival featured the large scale multi-site commission Spotlight, international artist-led project Interface and Promenade - a series of collectable postcards and posters by eight well-known artists with a local or coastal connection including: Maggi Hambling, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Billy Childish, Ben Eine, Iain Sinclair & Andrew Kotting, and Aardvark-on-Sea.

This year promises a wide variety of events, exhibitions and performances by local, regional and national artists. The festival team are in the initial stages of programming but as always the festival will involve a variety of events that are both open submission and curated by the festival team. Open Studios will run over weekends of 15 & 16 and 22 & 23 September, submissions will be begin at the end of April 2012.

Incurva Studios and the Work Ship are housed in a converted metal work factory in the heart of the old town, where a diverse jumble of eight Hastings artists and makers reside.

Leigh Dyer- Sculptor, creating work ranging from site specific and community based projects to gallery works and private commissions. Through his practice he aims to engage the viewer with their surroundings, encouraging them to look again or alter their association with a particular place/ site. Lucy Dixon- The relationships between geological landscapes and mythology have become a central theme throughout her work.
